The Start of a Patch!!

Fairly hot.  Please review the attached file.  The old man has tasked me to develop a helmet patch for HHC.  I've done so using the historical square ala WW2.  Please visit Eagles of War and have them make one of each of my seven variants and send them to me ASAP.  He wants a wide selection to choose from.

Each style uses standard desert "cinnamon/sand" or "black and loam" color scheme.  The patches should be miniature divisional patches either in full color, standard woodland or desert camouflage colors.  My design doesn't show that very well, but it’s the best I could do on short notice.

Mr. Goulet,

Thanks for all your help on this project!  This has been a fun project. I've spoken with the Chief of Staff and he's hot to get on this mission ASAP.  Although they didn't pick my favorite, we've decided to go with a modification of the patch I've attached (Dark brown base, sand colored square with Desert Eagle patch).  We want to make the following modifications:

1. Eliminate the "tick" mark on top of the square.  No tick. Sad, but true. 2. Shrink the dark brown border to a uniform width around all sides of the patch.

We want the border to be thinner than it is on the sample (about half the distance).  Same distance as is on the bottom edge of the pictured sample all the way around.

Hope my modification instructions are clear. If not I'll clarify.  Can you quote me a price per patch based on an initial purchase of 1200 (600 pairs)?  We'll be placing a second order for more desert patches soon and an initial of woodland in the next few months as we prepare to return home. We want to use an impact credit card.  I've been told: "CPT Page, you can't get this done fast enough!"  Need to wrap this up as soon a possible.

Thanks again,

The helmet patch is being made as we speak to the new specification.

I will try and keep them in stock for the Division. I will stock

1200 so they can be shipped at a moment's notice (the day they are needed). I told John the price would be $1.25 for each of the helmet patches.

Would you like me to give the patches to G-3 or mail them? The US Post Office takes 3 weeks.

Yes we do take impact credit cards and you can pay for them any time you like.

The total will be 1200 X $1.25 = $1,500.00.

Albert,

Hold the phone!!!  I hope you haven't started making the patches already.  I suspect you've already completed this mission by now, though.  The CG has changed his mind on the patch design and wants to go with one of the other sample designs after seeing the sample patches you sent (they just got here today).  Let me know what you think or if it’s too late.  Thanks for everything.  Sorry about this.

Mr. Goulet,

Thanks for your patience.  Once he saw the actual samples, the old man decided against the original he liked in favor of another.  I should have realized this and been patient.  The one attached is what we want; of course, there are a few modifications:

1.  Based on the size of the patch, it’s a little too large and will probably get covered up by the helmet band once sewn on.  We'd like to reduce the size of the patch overall.  Do this, please reduce the size of the dark brown, inner square to 1.75"x 1.75".

2.  Shorten the tick mark's height by one third.

3.  Shrink the patches outer, light brown border.  We'd like the border to be the same width on each side as it is on the bottom edge.  In other words, the bottom edge width (as it is right now) on left, right and bottom edges.  Please reduce the top margin correspondingly to the "tick" mark's new, adjusted height leaving a slightly narrower border.  We realize this will make the patch slightly taller than it is wide (not exactly square); that's okay.

4. My purchasing guy will contact you this afternoon with credit card information.  They don't want me to have the number; guess their afraid I'll buy a new car on the government's dime!  Please shoot me an image of the new patch when you get a chance.

5.  We still want 600 pairs (1200 single patches); no change.

You guys have been great.  This has been frustrating, but a lot of fun.  Glad EOW was involved; can't imagine trying to do this with a local guy.  Thanks for everything,

Good morning from Clarksville Tennessee,

Glad you like the patches. Yes I can have them change the patch but the center (Spice Brown) must be at this size, the 101st Airborne patch can not be made smaller (if made smaller the Airborne would not look correct). The tick or the khaki color around the tick can be changed.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Albert

Albert,

Here we go again.  DCSM Hill said he doesn't like the patch the Chief of Staff approved. We want to make yet another change:  Go back to the narrow spice background (same around all edges), sand square, no tick mark, with super-imposed desert 101st patch. Of course, we'll buy any patches you've already made, just send them to me with the now approved design.   Very embarrassing; I apologize for any problems.  Don't know if you drink or not, but I owe you a couple.

Thanks again,

501st Signal Battalion
501st Signal Battalion
501st Signal Battalion

By Pfc. Chris Jones, USA
Special to American Forces Press Service

MOSUL, Iraq (Oct. 6, 2003) -- Clad in desert camouflage uniforms and modern battle gear, soldiers today look nothing like they did in World War II. But the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) is slowly reviving the spirit of its lineage with the reinstatement of unit distinctive helmet emblems similar to those worn 60 years ago in Europe.

The 501st Signal Battalion joined the 101st's three infantry brigades in the resurrection of its World War II unit helmet patch in a late-September ceremony at the division's main command post in Mosul.

From the invasion of Normandy to the end of the war in Europe, soldiers of the 501st wore helmets with a box and a small tick mark on each side. The same emblem will now be worn, but with a lightning bolt in the center of the box, symbolizing the technological advancements that have made the unit more efficient, said 501st commander Lt. Col. Welton Chase Jr.

The designs for the 101st's helmet patches in World War II were based on a deck of cards. The 502nd Airborne Infantry Regiment wore a heart; the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment wore a club, and the 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment wore a spade. After World War II, the three regiments abandoned the patches. However, the 187th Infantry Regiment "Rakkasans," which used the Japanese Torii, continued to use the symbol, and it has since become the defining mark of the Rakkasans. Before leaving Fort Campbell, Ky., the home of the 101st, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the 502nd and the 327th joined the 187th in reinstating their World War II symbols.

To prepare for the invasion of Normandy, soldiers sewed their unit emblems on their helmets so they could find members of their unit after the invasion left them inevitably scattered across the French shoreline and in the woods, Chase said.

"Wherever they went in combat, the helmet was always the defining mark," Chase said. "Normandy left many soldiers scattered, so the symbols on their helmet helped them trace down other guys from their unit. On the battlefield, you can look and see immediately where a soldier is from. The same idea from World War II applies today. Everything that's done in the field goes faster if you can identify a soldier's unit just by looking at their helmet."

Reinstating a unit's helmet patch remains a commander's decision, and Chase said he doesn't feel it's unlikely other units will come around to sewing their legacies on their helmets as well.

"It wouldn't surprise me to see others resurrect their patches, too," he said.

The ceremony marked the first time 501st soldiers have worn the symbol since World War II.

"We use this distinct patch to link our past to our present, and it offers a bridge to the future of the 101st Airborne," Chase said. "Wherever we go in Iraq, our soldiers will remember with honor who fought and died before us."

Maj. Gen. William Lee, the first commander of the 101st, said before the division's entry into World War II, "The 101st has no history, but it does have a rendezvous with destiny."

After World War II, the 101st had rung his words true, becoming the first and only division to be awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. Command Sgt. Maj. Linza Chapman, 501st command sergeant major, said this history should not only be known, but shown.

"We've got a history," Chapman said. "We might as well tell it -- might as well show it."
